Congratulations to Mrs. Melanie Simpson on selection for Governor's Academy for School Leadership (GASL).  Mrs. Simpson currently supports education in three of Jefferson County’s elementary school:  New Market Elementary, Piedmont Elementary, and Talbot Elementary.  She is one of 25 assistant principals across the state of Tennessee selected to participate GASL’s 2nd cohort.  GASL is a unique partnership between the Tennessee Governor's Office, Department of Education, Vanderbilt University's Peabody College, and local school districts.  Mrs. Simpson will work closely with mentor principal, Mrs. Michelle Walker (Maury Middle School) throughout the year-long fellowship.

GASL aims to increase school leadership capacity and support individual growth toward becoming a highly effective building principal.  The program is anchored in practice-based mentorship, in-depth feedback cycles, and tailored training sessions. The mission of the program is to prepare a cohort of transformational school leaders who will improve school effectiveness/performance and unlock educational opportunities for all students.

Participation in GASL is competitive and quite prestigious.  Up and coming school leaders from across the state vie for an invitation through a rigorous process of nomination, application, and interviews.  Mrs. Simpson’s successful application to GASL continues a tradition of excellence in Jefferson County Schools, as Mr. Kevin Cline (JCHS) currently represents the district in the 2016 inaugural GASL cohort.
